This project examines the context and processes for renewable energy development in Ireland within a changing EU context. It will probe some of the significant drivers, processes and key components discernible from regional examples as well as from other key countries undergoing energy transformation such as Scotland, Germany and Denmark. The project will examine which elements, if any, of these processes and strategies may have applicability nationally in the medium term.
The main objective of this project is to examine what effective approaches might achieve greater social acceptance of wind and grid infrastructure, with increased community engagement and public participation in Ireland?
SLR Consulting were appointed to conduct this work and will work closely with NESC to carry out the research from August to October 2013. The final report will be discussed by the NESC Council before the end of the year.
An advisory group has been established for the project with members Bob Hanna (DCENR), Matt Kennedy (SEAI), Paul Kenny (Tipperary Energy Agency), Pat Downes (Bord na Mona) and Professor Anna Davies (TCD/ NESC Council).
