ISO 50001 Energy Certification Awarded to Tyndall National Institute

The Tyndall National Institute, Cork City, Ireland have become the first research institute in the world to achieve accredited certification to the international Energy Management System Standard ISO 50001:2011. The award was issued by the only accredited (internationally approved) ISO 50001 certification body in Western Europe, Certification Europe.

The Tyndall Institute is one of Europe’s leading ICT research and development centers, incorporating both commercial and academic research activities. The centre currently employs over 450 researchers, students and support staff and have over 200 industry partnerships and customers worldwide. Obtaining ISO 50001 certification will enable the Tyndall Institute to reduce costs internally while also leading the way for efficient energy management and reduction in carbon footprint within the ICT industry.

ISO 50001 is a newly developed international standard for an energy management system. It provides a framework for establishing energy management best practice to help organisations to improve their energy efficiency in a logical, controlled and systematic way. Becoming certified to this standard, through Certification Europe ensure that the organisation will continually progress to improve its energy efficiency.

The Tyndall National Institute manager, Pat Mehigan stated that “We are delighted to receive our certification today, the process of both implementing the system and becoming certified to ISO 50001 has been very worthwhile and has further improved our approach to energy management at Tyndall while also promoting the Institute to our staff and customers as an energy conscious organisation. We anticipate a 5% reduction in energy use over the next 12 months enabling us to meet our public sector targets of a 33% reduction in energy use by 2020. The approach that Certification Europe took in the overall audit process was very practical, suggesting areas of improvement during the different stages of the audits. Our Energy Management system will further assist us in managing our energy use”

Certification Europe’s commercial director, Mr. John Ryan presented the certificate and said “The Tyndall National Institute have demonstrated a strong commitment to efficient management of energy resources and overall environmental awareness, I am delighted to award this certificate, and am assured that the institute will continue to maintain its standards in the future”
