Bord Gáis has appointed Dave Kirwan to the position of managing director of Bord Gáis Energy.

In this role, Kirwan will be responsible for defining and implementing the overall business strategy and delivering commercial growth for Bord Gáis Energy, which includes the retail, assets and trading business units. He will report into the group chief executive of Bord Gáis, John Mullins. This is a newly created role that brings together all the business units within Bord Gáis Energy.

Kirwan has worked for Bord Gáis for over 12 years and was most recently the director of the assets division within Bord Gáis Energy. In that role, he was responsible for the development and operation of Bord Gáis’ power generation portfolio, including the recently commissioned €400m gas fired power station in Whitegate, Co Cork, which marked the company’s first significant move into electricity generation. He was also responsible for executing new investment opportunities and led the 2009 acquisition of SWS Natural Resources, one of the largest wind generators in Ireland, in a transaction worth over €500m.

During his time in Bord Gáis, Kirwan was also responsible for the launch of Firmus Energy, Bord Gáis’ subsidiary in Northern Ireland.

Prior to joining Bord Gáis, he worked for ESB and ESBI in the power generation sector in Ireland and abroad.

An electronic engineering graduate from UCD, Kirwan also holds an MBA from UCC.
