Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan T.D. nominates Professor William Reville to Chair the Board of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII).
Phil Hogan T.D., Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government has today (10/11/2011) nominated Professor William Reville to the position of Chairman of the Board of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland.
Before being formally appointed, Professor Reville will appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and Gaeltacht on the 23rd of November 2011 to discuss the approach which he will take to his role as Chairperson.
Minister Hogan said “It is my view that Professor Reville will make a valuable contribution as Chair of the RPII. This Agency plays an important role in protecting the public from the harmful effects of ionising radiation in our environment. It also delivers a range of specialist radiation measurement services, including food export certification which represents an important support to this key sector of the economy. The RPII also regulates the beneficial uses of radiation in healthcare and industry and play in important role in ensuring that people who work with radiation are properly protected from its harmful effects. It also provides an important advisory service to the Government and public on matters of nuclear safety. Professor Reville has extensive experience in these areas and I am confident that he will discharge his Chairman’s role with ability and dedication.”
In accordance with new procedures introduced by the Government to improve the transparency of appointments to State Boards, the positions of Chair and Board Member were the subject of a public call for expressions of interest in August 2011. Announcing the forthcoming appointment, the Minister thanked those who expressed an interest in Chairing the Board of the Institute.
