Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, today welcomed the publication of a new European Commission framework for climate and energy policy up to 2030. Ibec’s Head of Energy and Environment Policy Dr Neil Walker said: “The proposals are an ambitious attempt to reach consensus on how we can improve security of energy supply and boost competitiveness, while at the same time ensuring that Europe continues to lead the fight against climate change.
“This time, it is vital that Ireland’s greenhouse gas reduction target takes proper account of our unique emissions profile. Securing an appropriate treatment for the agriculture sector will be a priority when burden-sharing negotiations begin.”
The Commission’s communication proposes a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 1990 levels by 2030, with the burden being shared equitably across member states. It also proposes a 27% EU-wide target for renewable energy, and structural reforms to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme aimed at providing a more stable financial incentive than hitherto for low-carbon investment.
