Limerick County Council and Coffey Water have signed contracts for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Kilmallock. The new plant will replace the existing waste water treatment facility which was built in the 1940’s. Work on the contract, valued at Eur2.44 million, will commence shortly with the new plant expected to be completed by August 2013.
The contract includes the design and construction of a new pumping station, wastewater treatment plant and rising main. A trunk sewer diverting flows to the new pumping station will also be constructed.
“Approximately 4,000 customers will benefit from the provision of these high quality wastewater treatment facilities, representing a doubling of the existing plant’s capacity,” explains Paul Crowe, director of services, Limerick County Council.
He adds: “The existing waste water treatment plant does not have adequate capacity to allow the town develop and expand into the future. In addition, the existing plant cannot provide an adequate level of treatment to comply with recently introduced regulations. The new plant will provide the additional capacity required for the town’s development, while also ensuring that the water quality of the River Loobagh is protected.”
The contractor for the project is Coffey Water, Athenry, Co.Galway. The Consulting Engineer for the project is WYG Consulting Engineers, Curaheen Road, Bishopstown, CountyCork. The project is funded by Limerick County Council and the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government through the Water Services Investment Programme.
