The stars of the literary world turned out in full last Thursday night the 17th November for the sixth annual Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards 2011. The glamorous literary awards event was held at the Concert Hall at the RDS and was catered for by major corporate and awards events caterers With Taste.
World renowned Irish poet Seamus Heaney was just one of many well known literary giants who were honoured at the 2011 Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards on November 17th at the RDS Concert Hall. Bringing together the entire literary community for a night of celebration and acknowledgement the event was a great success.
The awards show now in its sixth running had its largest audience ever with a range of people all involved in the literary world including not just accomplished authors and poets but literary agents, publishers, book distributors and many prominent media folk all honoured for their part in the continued success of Irish literature. Category winners on the night included film maker Neil Jordan for his novel “Mistaken” and many noted literary stars of fiction and non-fiction genres such as Alan Glynn, Belinda McKeon, Tim Robinson, Caitlin Moran, Sheila O’Flanagan, Rachel Allen, Anna Carey, Chris Judge and Nicolas Roche.
The highlight of the evening however was the awarding of world renowned Irish poet Seamus Heaney with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Stars of the political and literary world were on hand to pay tribute to Heaney, who is one of Irelands best loved and most revered poets. Former president of the United States Bill Clinton sent a pre-recorded video tribute to the Irishman who he described as one of his “favourite poets” while fellow poet and Irelands newest President Michael D Higgins, who graced the evening as honorary Guest of Honour was on hand to present his peer with the award.
Overall this evening celebration and gala dinner proved to be a great night out for all involved with well deserved credit going to all participants and organisers.
